Professor Xiaoping Hu obtained his PhD in medical physics from the University of Chicago in 1988.

He was on faculty in the department of radiology and biomedical engineering at the University of Minnesota in 1990-2002, where he became a full professor in 1998. From 2002-2016, he was professor and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in biomedical imaging in the joint department of biomedical engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, where he served as the Founding Director of Biomedical Imaging Technology Center. In 2016, Dr. Hu joined University of California-Riverside as Professor and Chair of Bioengineering, Director of the Center for Advanced Neuroimaging, and Provost fellow. He has worked on the development and application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) since 1984, and has made exceptional contributions to neuroMRI.

To date, he has authored and co-authored 313 peer refereed journal articles, which have garnered 31000+ citations and an h-index of 95. Dr. Hu has played a leadership role in the field of biomedical imaging. He has organized numerous scientific conferences and sessions. He served or is serving in various editorial capacities for IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Brain Connectivity and Frontiers in Neuroscience. He served on the board of trustees of international society for magnetic resonance in medicine in 2012-2015. As a mentor, Dr. Hu has trained 35 PhD students and 40+ post-doctoral fellows. Many of his former trainees are now prominent leaders in the field. Dr. Hu was elected as a fellow of international society for magnetic resonance in medicine in 2004, a fellow of IEEE in 2009, a fellow of AIMBE in 2009 and a fellow of AAAS in 2022.
