Hanzhang Lu, PhD, is the Elias A. Zerhouni Professor of Radiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, with a secondary appointment in Biomedical Engineering. He also serves as the Director of the MRI Service Center and Chief of Neurofunction Section in the Radiology Department. Dr. Lu obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and his PhD degree from the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Lu’s research is focused on understanding brain physiology and pathophysiology using non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, with a special emphasis on their relationship to brain aging, cerebrovascular diseases, and cognitive impairment. Dr. Lu has previously developed novel MRI techniques to measure brain oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), cerebral blood volume (CBV), metabolism (CMRO2), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, which has been widely cited and used in the field. Dr Lu is an MPI of an NIH P41 grant funded National Center for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering titled “MRI Resource for Physiologic, Metabolic and Anatomic Biomarkers”, and have disseminated his techniques to more than 100 institutions/hospitals worldwide. Dr. Lu is a Fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), Distinguished Investigator of the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research (ARBIR), and Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Dr. Lu served as a charter member of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) review panel Medical Imaging (MEDI) and as a Chair of several NIH study sections including the Biomedical Imaging Technology (BMIT), High-end Instrumentation (HEI), Brain Initiative study sections, and several special emphasis panels. Dr. Lu serves on the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the ISMRM (2023-2025). Dr. Lu is a past president of the Overseas Chinese Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (OCSMRM) (2021-2022). Dr. Lu’s trainees have received many awards including Junior Fellows, Young Investigator Awards, Best Poster Awards, Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Student Stipend Awards, and American Heart Association pre-doctoral awards.
